Managing household payroll for a Migrant Domestic Worker (MDW) is usually straightforward since helpers receive a fixed basic monthly salary. The Official MOM Daily Salary Formula

MOM calculates an MDW's daily rate based on a standard 26-day working month (30 calendar days minus 4 weekly rest days):  

Daily Salary Rate = Monthly Basic Salary ÷ 26

For example, if your helper's monthly basic salary is S$780:

• Daily Rate: S$780 ÷ 26 = S$30.00 per day

Pay in-Lieu of a Rest Day & Rounding Up

Under MOM regulations, MDWs are entitled to one rest day per week, with at least one rest day per month being mandatory and non-compensable. If your helper mutually agrees to work on any of her remaining rest days, you must pay her at least one full day's basic wage for each day worked.  

When calculating the daily compensation, the exact division often yields a fraction of a dollar (e.g., S$670 ÷ 26 = S$25.769).

• Best Practice: Employers typically round up the daily amount to the nearest whole dollar (e.g., rounding S$25.77 up to S$26.00).
• Why it matters: Rounding up is a thoughtful gesture of appreciation that builds trust, keeps payout amounts clean, and prevents misunderstandings when issuing itemised monthly payslips.  

Pro-Rating Salary and Unpaid Leave

• Incomplete Months: If your helper starts mid-month or leaves before the month ends, multiply her actual working days by her daily rate (Monthly Basic ÷ 26).  
• Unpaid Leave: Deduct one daily rate (Monthly Basic ÷ 26) for each working day she is absent on approved unpaid leave.
